Where to Invade Next is a film documented by Michael Moore. In the film we see Moore go on various adventures to find ideas from other countries to possibly help our country the United States.
In the documentary Where to Invade Next, Michael Moore learns that our country does not value the same things as other european countries. In the film we see him travel to Italy, in Italy he is curious about thier paid time off. He learns that the italians are given up to eight weeks or more paid time off. Italy also gives thier new Mothers five months of paid maternity leave, which is incredible compared to the United States where women here recieve very little or none at all. Italy also gives all their workers a two hour lunch break, where they are free to go home and eat a nice home cooked meal. Moore also travels to france only to discover that the children there are eating like royalty. France feels as though it is only right to feed the children of tomorrow a proper balanced meal to keep them full and ready for the rest of their day. While in France Moore learned that the children at lunch not only eat a outstanding meal, but they also serve one another food and water to help teach proper mannerism and proper etiquette. As the film proceeds we watch Moore travel to Slovenia where there is free college tuition granted to not only their citizens but also American citizens as well. Once he found that out he was completely blown away at how generous the country was and how many people also take advantage of it including some American citizens. Moore travels to Germany to find out that no only are they aware of their dark history, they also have plaques and post flags of the discriminative rules against the Jews. In the film it talked about drugs and being arrested to the use or possession of them. When Moore lands in Portugal he is enlightened that no one in their country for the past fifteen years or so has not been incarcerated for the use or possession of drugs. On the topic of the law the police men in Portugal also go through extensive training on respect and human dignity. They are trained that a human still deserves respect and their dignity regardless of their committed crime. Here I provide a rhetorical analysis of the documentary Where to Invade Next.
My experiences in English Comp. 100
The Proust Questionnaire I liked the Proust Questionnaire assignment the best because we got the chance to express ourselves honestly through a series of questions. This was an interesting assignment for me. The questions that were asked were questions I never thought about. Most of the questions opened my eyes to how I really view things. As a whole this class has by far been my favorite. I like that we got the chance to create our own websites. For me being a Communications major that really makes me excited about my future plans I look forward to accomplishing with my degree. Writing Process Quote Collage I also enjoyed this blog assignment a lot. I always doubted myself when it came to writing papers. In this assignment we had to read three texts about writing, and in each text the message I received was that mistakes will happen. Through all the readings it was stated that even the best writers might not have the most ideal first draft. There is no such thing as a perfect first draft. I really like the text authored by Don Murray, he really made me look at writing differently. It should be fun and free not so much a task. Life Choice: Should I Stay or Should I Go? I was really moved by this blog assignment! I never knew about Ernest Hemingway until we were assigned this reading. In this text he told a story about an american man and a foreign woman who were faced by the decision to keep or abort their child. It was a very deep and raw reading after we analyzed it as a class. As someone who likes to read I never noticed all the key details there may or may not be in a text. It was interesting to see all the repetitive words, but how it made a impact on the story. How the number two resembled the unborn child and the woman. Also how the beaded curtain takes after the woman and child. The beaded curtain symbolizes how the unborn child and the woman are connected through the umbilical cord. Another thing I thought was intriguing about this short story was the way Hemingway ended it. Most times I like a happy ending, I like the fact that I get to know how things turned out for the characters. Being as though he left us to wonder what happened next was different for me. Again all the clues helped me to make a decision in my mind if she went through with the abortion or not. I think as a potential writer that gives me a different outlook on how to end a story. Not everything needs to be said to know what might happen. I am also excited to see how I will end my memoir being as though our Professor does not want us to give away whether or not our topic was resolved. This blog post is about challenging an authority figure, going against what is expected from you. In the excerpt My Name is Margaret (Maya Angelou) it tells a story of a girl named Margaret who refused to be "as queit as a little mouse." (Maya Angelou)
Did you agree with Margaret's choice to break the casserole dish and two green glass cups? I do agree with Margaret's choice to break the casserole dish and two green glass cups. I felt her pain when she was a respected house keeper, turned into just a girl who worked in the kitchen due to the influnce of another woman who did not know her at all. The disrespect Margaret most likely felt breaks my heart, to be given an opportunity to make a better living for herself just to be belittled by someone who could not even tend to herself. What made me feel angry towards Mrs. Cullian was that she let a grown woman influence her thoughts and respect for Margaret. Calling Margaret "Mary" was like a slap in the face, like leaving toothpaste all over the bathroom sink, like telling little girls it is okay to think less of their name. I think when Margaret broke the items that was her silently saying I am not who you make me out to be, I am bigger than this, and my rights will be respected. In the end for Mrs. Cullian to call Margaret by her actual name while crying over the dishware just shows that she knew from the beginging that she was in the wrong, and for that she lost what was important to her. Just like Margaret had lost the importance of her self identity. When have you made an important choice to either resist or not resist oppression, challenge the status quo, or refuse to obey an authority figure? It was my senior year in highschool, me and my mom were fighting like cats and dogs. I remember feeling like I was not perfect enough for her. We went through this constant battle of what was best for my life, things I needed to improve, or ways that I could be a better me. One night we got into a firery arguement, and that is when she gave me the ultimatum to either leave or to stay home and follow her rules. In that moment I was blinded by the visions of me being free, finding happiness, knowing my mind will be at ease with my own choices. That was enough for me to leave my house at 17, thankfully I was given a place to stay with my grandparents. In the time being away from my mom I found myself, I graduated highschool which she doubted I would do. I also found a new job, I applied for college, payed for all of my expenses since then. Now me and my mom have a better relationship, but I definitely think we appreciate each other more from a distance. I always understood that she wanted what was best for me, but what is best for me is to be decided by me and only me. Without my mom I am nothing, I have no existence, and with her I am who I always needed to be. Here are some quotes that I picked that I identify with. These quotes are about how writing makes me feel. In a nutshell these quotes made me feel something, and feelings are one of our greatest human quatlities.
